The property has settled, and moving day is on the horizon – your dream of moving into your new home is about to come true, but before that happens, you need to pack up and move out of your current property. Moving house is known as one of the most stressful times in your life, so we’ve put together this handy checklist to make moving a breeze.
Read on to learn more about how to get organised and reduce your stress levels with our moving-out checklist.
Book moving vehicle or removalist service
Once you have a moving day, we recommend this is the first step you take – you don’t want to be left in the lurch if everything is booked out when moving day comes around. If you feel up to moving yourself, book a truck and ask your family and friends for help. If you have lots of heavy items and large pieces of furniture, consider using a professional moving service.
Sort, sell, donate, bin
Before you start packing:
- Conduct a stocktake of all your belongings, Marie Kondo-style.
- Be realistic in what you decide to bring with you and what can be donated or sent to the bin.
- Think of it as a major spring clean.
Have a garage sale
Once you have sorted through your belongings, you probably have quite a few items to sell. Organise a garage sale a few weeks before moving day and try to sell as much as possible. Whatever is leftover can be donated.
Get packing boxes
If you’re using a removalist and they are packing for you, they will include boxes. If you’re planning on moving yourself, you’ll need plenty of packing boxes. Look around on Gumtree or Facebook for secondhand boxes.
Clearly label each box
As you pack, create an inventory of what valuables are in each box and where they need to go (kitchen, bathroom, etc.). Labelling everything makes unpacking so much easier.
Organise utility disconnection and connection
Once you have your moving date, request your utilities disconnected at your current home and connected at your new address. These utilities include gas, electricity, water, phone, and broadband/NBN.
Transfer your home and contents insurance
Ensure your insurer covers your belongings during the move in case of loss or breakage during transit.
Change of address
Be sure to change your address or organise mail redirection. You’ll also need to update your address on all your accounts (driver’s license, electoral role, banks, and insurance companies).
Deep clean the property
Put on some rubber gloves and spend a day cleaning your home from top to bottom. If it’s a rental property, pay close attention to the range hood, oven, carpets, and doorframes to ensure your get your bond back. If you don’t have the time or inclination to do the cleaning, invest in the services of a professional cleaner. Whichever option you choose, make sure the whole house is sparkling clean, ready for its next inhabitants.
Following these steps will help smooth out the moving process, allowing you to enjoy moving into your dream home.
