History of Applecross
Applecross traces its origins back to 1830 when its land was assigned to Lionel Lukin, a former officer in the Imperial Russian Army. Lukin largely ignored the land and, in February 1896, Applecross was bought by Alexander Matheson, second son of a Scottish baron. Matheson formed the Western Australian Investment Company Limited, subdivided his acquisition, and named it after the Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross of Scotland.
Driving around the suburb, you can see the nod to its Scottish ancestry in the street names: Carron, Gairloch, Ullapool, Kintail, Strome, Ardross, Alness, Kishorn, Glenelg, Duncraig, Dunvegan, Killilan and Roskhill.
