Only minutes from the CBD, the city of South Perth is a thriving hub of cafes, boutique stores, funky eateries, spacious parklands and more. For those fortunate enough to live within this vibrant corner of Perth, hotspots such as the Perth Zoo, Sir James Mitchell Park and the South Perth Foreshore are only metres away – and perfect for a day out with the whole family.
It’s clear there’s a lot of ground to cover if you’re considering living in this bustling suburb – so here’s everything you’ll need to know as a South Perth local.
A Kids’ Day Out
Home to over 1300 animals from Australia, Africa, Asia and South America, the Perth Zoo has been a South Perth institution since its development in 1898. The 41-acre site presents an array of animals amongst naturalistic, habitual settings with a priority on their welfare and wellbeing. Subtle safety barriers such as moats and glass are used – bridging the worlds of the animals and the humans in a way that is sure to thrill every kid that enters its gates.
Picturesque Dog-Walking Spots
It’s impossible to mention the City of South Perth without mentioning the iconic South Perth Foreshore. Occupying approximately 62 hectares of space, this stretch of land boasts a stunning view of the Perth CBD, and, along the way, contains an array of shops, cafes, beaches, lakes and bike paths to enjoy. If you plan to stop along the way, there are also a range of picnic tables, barbecues, toilets and playgrounds scattered across the shoreline.
Another great spot for a walk is the Ernest Johnson Reserve. Host to two spacious sporting ovals, the Reserve also has two playgrounds and accommodates the South Perth Little Athletics, South Perth Junior Football Club, Girl Guides South Perth and the Rotary Club of South Perth (to name a few).
Considered the ‘foodie’ haven of South Perth, Angelo Street is rife with options for coffee lovers, those with a sweet tooth, spice-enthusiasts and everyone in between. On Angelo Street, you’ll find an extensive range of trendy cafes, bars, specialty coffee shops and gourmet European food stores.
Established in 1988, the Angelo Street Market is one of the streets’ staple must-visits. Known for its fresh local produce and hand-picked gourmet grocery lines, the staff at the Market collaborate closely with local growers and suppliers to ensure the people of South Perth are fully stocked with all of their favourite foods, drinks and other goods.
If it’s a full meal you’re after, Angelo Street boasts a varied array of old school and trendy cafes to dine at over a coffee and a chat. Eateries such as The Globe and Halo Espresso specialise in breakfast and brunch options, whereas the Typsy Monk is the perfect spot to grab a drink and some bar food whilst catching the action of the street from afar.
For those with a penchant for the theatrical, the Old Mill Theatre on Mends Street is a gem in Perth’s community theatre scene. Operating out of one of South Perth’s most historic buildings, the original Mechanics Institute Hall, this not-for-profit theatre group puts on a range of plays, musicals and variety nights throughout the year. Having just celebrated its 70th anniversary, this classic theatre has provided many nights of entertainment throughout its illustrious history.
Only a few blocks from the bustling Angelo Street is Como’s Cygnet Cinema – the first purpose-built cinema immediately south of the city. Included on the State’s Heritage Register, this intriguing, art-deco style movie house first opened in 1938 and has since operated thanks to a conservation grant from the Heritage Council of Western Australia in 2004. The cinema now screens an array of popular films alongside indie flicks, international films, and varying film festivals.
